The Ministry of Communication, Science and Technology has awarded Huawei (T) Ltd an outstanding Information and Communications Technology (ICT) leadership and contribution award.

Huawei received the award during a two day ICT summit in Dar es Salaam dubbed ‘Connect to Connect’ (C2C) on account of its exceptional participation in the ICT industry and leading position in conducting research and contributions in the evolution of broadband connectivity in the country.

Speaking during the summit held in the city, Huawei’s senior solutions consultant for Eastern and Southern Africa, Dr Bello Moussa said countries of Eastern and Southern Africa have shown great enthusiasm in investing and innovating in the broadband ecosystem over the past few years.

“These countries are of course at different stages of ICT development but unfortunately, 90 percent of the population of the region can still not access broadband at home. So therefore we are far behind more advanced markets,” he declared.

The summit which kick-started on Thursday brings together ICT practitioners, policy makers, investors and solution providers to deliberate on how to drive country to country broadband connectivity across Africa, from coast to coast. They are also looking at innovations that will propel Tanzania’s economy and facilitate public service delivery at a higher levels of efficiency.

During the presentation, Huawei outlined aspects of strategic thinking on a continuous developing path from three gigawatt broadband connectivity to 4G and 4.5G and finally to  five gigawatts connectivity levels. Moving to long term evolution (LTE) where a country stays at a moderate connectivity level for a long time, as it enables optimal competitiveness.

Huawei Wireless Marketing vice president Alex Wang said that Huawei has helped operators build nearly 200 LTE networks worldwide and accumulate abundant experience on mobile network evolution.

The company continues to pay attention to protect customers’ investments and more importantly focus on network evolution to help customers improve competitiveness levels he asserted.

“Huawei’s contribution in 5G research is recognised by the industry worldwide,” he said, elaborating that the company was awarded the ‘Biggest Contribution to 5G Development’ at a 5G global summit on 26th June 2015 LTE workshop.

This is also the second time that the government recognises Huawei dedication in the country, having signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the firm on ICT strategies to be adopted in pursuit of the country’s 2025 Development Vision and the Big Results Now drive in the service delivery sector, he added.
